Art Appreciation: 1949 Gilco Fiat 1100 MM

Fiat Gilco 1100

This absolute stunner of a Machine participated in the Mille Miglia from 1951-1955. Without the race numbers or chassis number I’m at a loss as to her results, but at least she looked damned good getting there.

via.

Bonus: build your own Gilco chassis for this car — if you happen to be a skilled welder.

The plate MI132259 was issued to Fiat 1100S, chassis 500019. The chassis was by Fiat. The car was modified 1951 by Mantovani e Vacchini and was rebodied by Colli into a siluro form … hence somewhat “cigar” shaped. The 1951 modifications seem to have included the use of a Gilco chassis. It became numbered 0028351, most likely in Milano with a distinctive marking at the beginning and end. This was a “numero d’ufficio”, often assigned when a car no longer conformed to its original configuration. I have a photo of the car when it ran the Sassi-Superga hillclimb in 1954 following its participation on the Mille Miglia earlier in the year. It did not have the appearance of the car shown in your images. Further, the original car became re-registered in Torino, meaning the Milano plate was taken out of service at that point. So, there are some puzzles to resolve?
