Art Appreciation: Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 LeMans Coupe

Too bad they didn’t give points for beauty in the 1938 24 Hours of LeMans. If they did, this Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Coupe would have been undefeated until the mid-sixties. As it was, Raymond Sommer and Clemente Biondetti weren’t able to capitalize on Sommer’s fastest lap when the car lost oil pressure. Even so, stunning.

The only thing that might be prettier than this is the 1938 Alfa 8C Mille Miglia Spider… they really don’t make them like this anymore, computer generated designs will never hold a candle to something drawn up with a sharp pencil and a French curve.

Who sais things are computerdesigned now? Most car manufacturers still draw up their plans and ideas. When they make the mold, however, most designers begin using computer software alongside the clay model.

For that time, the 2900B is a fantasic machine great
design, very fast one of very best cars, that alfa romeo
ever built.

Just beautiful. You could sit all day and admire the shape and precision of the design let alone appreciate the engineering feat that created one of the great Le Mans racers ever. I heard that one sold for US$10 million a few years back. Is this true.
